CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Mission of the Commission on Cancer
The Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.
 
This is a request for your residents to submit abstracts for the upcoming 2011-2012 Virginia Physician-in-Training Cancer Paper Competition.  General surgery residents, surgical specialty residents and fellows in the Commonwealth’s Surgical Training Programs are eligible to submit abstracts for competition in two categories, Basic Science and Clinical Science. The overall winner of the competition will be submitted to represent the Virginia Chapter for judging at the national level.  Please note that the state competitions are replacing the previous national cancer paper competition for 2011-2012. Leading abstracts that have been previously presented at a state, regional or national meeting within 24 months will be considered for judging.
 
The papers should describe original research in the area of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and/or follow up categorized as: 1) basic/translational research or 2) clinical investigation/quality of life.  The topic should have relevance to general or subspecialty surgical care in accordance to the mission of the Commission on Cancer.
 
Papers should be submitted electronically to kirsten.edmiston@inova.org. No faxed or mailed abstracts will be accepted. The deadline for submission for the State competition is 5:00 p.m. January 13, 2012.   This is a firm date and no exceptions will be made.
 
 

  • Abstracts should be single typed page measuring 8½ x 11 inches, with a left margin of 1½ inches. It is permissible to single –space the abstract.   The abstract should provide adequate information and objective data to evaluate the abstract properly.
  • At the top of the page, state the full title of the abstract and full name of principle author and presenter, along with academic degrees.
  • Use upper and lower case, except in title. Title should be underlined.
  • At the bottom of the page, a footnote should be included to provide the principal author’s mailing address and telephone number, E-mail, and Fax( Very important)
  • Photographs should not accompany the abstract.

Winners will be announced on February 24, 2012 and will be expected to present their winning papers at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons being held April 27-29, 2012 at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia.  The first place clinical science and basic science winners will receive $500 each.  They will also receive one night hotel stay and mileage. 

Abstracts selected as winners at the VA ACoS State Chapter level will be advanced to the Commission on Cancer in Chicago no later than June 30, 2012. Each abstract will be judged by the Committee on Cancer Liaison based upon originality, scientific merit, and clinical relevance to oncology and the mission of the Commission on Cancer.  The author of the first place winning abstract in the ACoS-CoC Research Paper Competition will receive a plaque and cash award of $1,000, travel expenses to the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress with the opportunity to make a presentation on his/her research to the Annual Meeting of the Commission on Cancer.  The authors of the second and third place winning abstracts will receive a cash award of $500, and an invitation to present a poster presentation of their research during the Annual Meeting of the Commission on Cancer.
