Virginia Chapter
The Virginia Chapter, American College of Surgeons is on of 99 chapters of the American College of Surgeons including two chapters in Canada, and 30 in countries around the world.

Chapter membership is open to all Fellows and Associate Fellows of the College, as well as to members of the Candidate Group. Membership in the Virginia Chapter, ACS offers a great way to communicate with other surgeons in order to advance our common goal of improving the quality of surgical care. Membership also offers the opportunity to participate in CME courses in your geographic area.

The annual meetings of the Virginia Chapter are held in conjunction with the Virginia Surgical Society. The 2008 annual meeting will be held in Falls Church on May 2-4. As always, the meeting program will offer exciting speakers and informative presentations. But, equal in importance, it will be at our annual gathering that we exchange information, form friendships, and solidify our presence in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Each year, the Virginia Chapter sends two members to the ACS Leadership Conference as Young Surgeons Representatives. This meeting offers a way for Young Surgeons to become involved with both the ACS and the Virginia Chapter. Topics include legal updates, mentoring workshops, updates on ACS activitis and programs, risk management communications strategies, professional liability and practice management.

Representatives from the Council also participate in the Leadership Conference in the Capitol Hill visits, where they speak with legislators in Congress and learn about the top legislative issues for the year. The ACS staff teaches the attendees how to lobby the representatives on topics such as professional liability, physician payment, trauma care system planning and development and physician on-call issues under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA).

We urge you to share your thoughts, concerns, issues and ideas with us!
